Built in 1927 and clad entirely in stone, this distinguished Crestwood colonial-style residence combines more than 5,600 square feet of gracious interiors with exceptional architectural character, generous proportions, and rare scale for the neighborhood. With a flagstone terrace, a detached two-car garage, and a fully self-contained lower-level suite, the residence offers an extraordinary blend of Washington history, entertaining space, and adaptable city living. The stone façade, with its grand multi-pane windows and pitched roofline, recalls Crestwood's golden era of construction — the kind of solid, masonry-built residence that simply isn't made anymore. Five fireplaces, refined millwork, and generous room proportions carry throughout, largely as they've always been. The drawing room and study span nearly 40 feet along the front of the house, while the dining room, anchored by its own fireplace, leads to a kitchen with a breakfast area. Upstairs, the primary suite includes the sleeping room, office, dressing room — easily converted back to a seventh bedroom — bath, laundry closet, and lounge warmed by its own fireplace, the kind of separation that lets a large home feel restful rather than sprawling. A second bedroom suite, also with its own fireplace and bath, sits just off the landing, while two additional bedrooms and a full bath complete the top floor, which opens out to an enclosed rooftop space. On the lower level, a fully self-contained two-bedroom suite offers its own living area, kitchen, laundry, and bath — ideal for extended family, guests, or independent living. A flagstone terrace and tree-shaded lawn surround the home, creating settings for entertaining while a detached two-car garage adds a coveted convenience. Just minutes from downtown and an easy walk to Rock Creek Park, the residence offers a rare opportunity to own one of Crestwood's classic stone homes — a house with real bones, generous scale, and the kind of character that's earned, not manufactured. Listing is expected to be active 9/24 with full photography.

The genius of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) manifested itself not only in his work but also in his theories of residential architecture. He believed that the house was as organic as its occupants and should therefore function as a living entity. Large and open living spaces where the residents could enjoy light and views were paramount, as well as fully operable windows that allow for ventilation without the use of mechanical systems. Here, a two-story tower of windows punctuates one corner of the front, accompanied by a series of clerestory-like windows. These details plus a stone-clad chimney all pay homage to Fallingwater. The main block of the house is long and horizontal. The south-facing façade is reached by a series of terraced staircases, reminiscent of Wright’s work at Taliesin West and the c. 1902 Arthur B. Heurtley House in Oak Park, Illinois. This house was designed by the African American-owned architectural firm of Byrd & Bryant which was a prominent and successful local business. It had several residential commissions in Crestwood, this one being its most distinguished. Wright’s profound effect on the spirit of homebuilding is immediately discernible. Constructed in 1958, the house blends the Prairie Style with elements that began to appear in the modernist design vocabulary of the late 1950s. This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to purchase a house that has sold only twice in the last 70 years. The current owners were exemplary custodians of this fine composition: spacious enough for entertaining and intimate enough to be a private urban retreat. The kitchen and bathrooms were renovated with the objective of maintaining the original feeling of the house with high-quality materials and fixtures. The main living space is framed by a vaulted ceiling, and the experience of the interiors is one of tranquility. Original woodwork was preserved, and details such as the custom cast-iron gate which mirrors the detail of the front door are indicative of the level of craftsmanship that comprises the overall esthetic. Approximately 4,200 square feet are disposed over two floors, and all four bedrooms, two living spaces, office, and service rooms have been carefully addressed in the owners’ restoration. The outdoor spaces are as engaging as the interior where one moves through a series of rooms discretely set off by different textures and dimensions of plantings. A two-car garage is accessed on the side of the house, obviating any visual distractions from the entrance.

Many of the residences in this part of Crestwood share a common history. Built from the 1920s through the 1940s, these Colonial Revivals were designed with a symmetrical plan to reflect their 18th- century antecedents. During this period, these houses, like many American homes built at that time, were set on generous lots and offered finished basements for additional living space that could be used as a respite from the region’s unremitting summer’s heat. Now completely renovated and reimagined, all rooms within the approximately 4,600 square feet of interior space relate to each other in a logical manner that is reminiscent of the original house. The main level is open and gracious which is first experienced in the entry hall. This level comprises a large sunroom, living room, breakfast room, kitchen that opens onto the rear garden, powder room, generous pantry, and dining room. The feeling of the original house was maintained by using a modified but traditional floor plan. The second level offers a large primary bedroom with a substantial walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom. There are also two bedrooms of a generous scale, a full bathroom, and laundry on this level. Three original dormers on the third floor bring additional natural light and living space to this level. Also found on this floor are two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and one additional room that could serve as a home office or storage. The lower level offers a bedroom, a full bathroom, family room with wet bar, and an additional laundry room. A two-car garage has been outfitted with an EV charger, and a secured parking pad provides off-street parking for a third vehicle.
